In 2006 I researched, initiated, sponsored and led a simple piece of legislation that allowed the domestic partners of City employees to receive the same as married couples did.
This Plainfield ordinance went into effect BEFORE the state-wide rule went into effect. The first version of the state's law simply allowed the governing bodies to to offer domestic partners the same benefits as married couples. The state's law was three years old when I picked it up in 2006.
Back in 2006, the benefits to domestic parners was not an automatic given, and each municipality had to pass it's own ordinance.
Which is what we did in 2006 when I led the issue.
